What’s brewing: IPA, pomegranate saison

Chris has bottled two great beers this week: a West Coast-style IPA (75 IBUs, 7% alcohol) and a pomegranate saison. I should have taken pictures, but an empty glass isn’t all that thousand-word-worthy. (In other words, they’re both easy-drinking stuff.)

Next up is the famous Carolina Common and a Golden Ale.

By the way, the pomegranate is full of great tradition and legend. The Old Testament depicts the pomegranate as a symbol of both condemnation and forgiveness. Hebrew tradition claims the fruit to have exactly 613 seeds, the same number of laws in the Torah and the number of nerves in the human body. In Greek mythology, Persephone mistakenly ate the seeds of the pomegranate, condemning herself to the realm of the dead. It’s the fruit on the coat of arms for both the British Medical Association and the Royal College of Obstetricians.

Pomegranate isn’t a Southern fruit, but it tells some great stories. I’ve heard iceberg lettuce is pretty jealous about all this.

  1. WANT WANT WANT!

When will you start selling?? :)

  2. For you, Matt, it’s free. You’re the first post on the Fullsteam website. You deserve a beer.

Yeah, I’m serious. Email me (sean@fsb) and I’ll drop a few off for you.

    How’s that for firsties!

  3. Okay, what about the rest of us? This is great news (I can’t tell you how many times I checked popthecap in the last month)!

    When can we drink?

Thanks for bringing something like this to Durham?

  4. DRR — Chris and I are planning some fun future events. But please know that breweries aren’t built in a day…we’re looking at launching next Spring, realistically.

But we’ll have some informal tastings and gatherings for you early adopters (read: all you people thinking about beer before noon)

I’ll set up the email subscribe feature later today so you can stay informed.

Thank you so much for your interest, all. It means so much to us.

  5. First of all, that should have been “Durham!” not “Durham?” in my first post.

Secondly, I think (hope?) that most of us out here can be patient and understand that starting any business is a long and complicated process, yet still be excited and anxious for this.

Just let us know when we can officially give you money in exchange for beer, and I am sure that many of us will be happy to do so.

  6. You betcha, DRR. We’re so excited to be serving our beer, serving the local community.

I waited tables at Magnolia Grill years ago. It’s interesting how that whole “service industry” thing has really become ingrained in me.

  7. I am very excited for you. Opening a brewery in Durham will be fantastic. I work at Carolina Brewery in Chapel Hill and truly appreciate what you are doing. Best of luck in the coming months. I really can’t wait to start drinking your craft beer!

  8. Thanks so much, Adam!

I’m a big fan of Carolina Brewery (especially that IPA!). Robert, Jon, Matt, and Thomas are class acts. They’ve been very supportive.
