Pictures from the hop planting session

Many thanks to Betsy Kirkland, photographer at NC State for such wonderful photos. All photographs courtesy of NCSU Communication Services.

We will follow-up with Rob Austin at NC State mid-season on how the hops are growing. Word is we need some more rain!

In the meantime, be sure to check out this article on the hops project, which was made possible by a Golden LEAF foundation grant. And if you missed the video the first time around, well, here it is!

We’re thrilled for the opportunity to help build a local beer economy. One-quarter acre at a time.

  1. hey there – where exactly are ya’ll growing hops? the little i know about hops, i just wouldn’t have thought it would grow around here in the piedmont. curious how it goes – think it would be a fantastic crop to cultivate locally – or i’m guessing, a bit further to the west? way to go.

  2. It’s NC State that’s tending to the plot, which is near the Garner/Raleigh border. Hops take two years to fully establish, but this first year has produced some healthy, vigorous vines!

  3. I’m a backyard hop grower in Durham and haven’t had the best luck. They are not in the ideal spot for hops as they don’t get fun sun but they grow really well until the beetles get here. I have had them in for two years and each summer they are destroyed by the Japanese beetles.

I hope you have better luck!
