Hardy Orange Helles

Limited Releases Collabs Crisp

On Tap (RTP)

A citrusy, cripsy Helles Lager brewed with foraged Trifoliate oranges and sourwood leaves collected at Steel String Brewery's Pluck Farm -- all gathered by Triangle Land Conservancy volunteers, and staff of both Fullsteam and Steel String.

Cold-Hardy is a collaboration with Steel String Brewery as part of the Triangle Land Conservancy’s Beers From Here series, celebrating the lands behind local flavor -- including the invasive Citrus Trifoliata.

Trifoliate (Hardy) orange is an invasive deciduous thorny shrub. It fruits in autumn with fuzzy bright orange, ping pong-sized globes. The skin and zest has a unique, almost cloying perfume scent. Inside is a bitter and seedy fruit. It's a tough beast, this one. But in restrained quantities, it works incredibly well in a delicate Helles Lager.

Sourwood is a deciduous tree in the blueberry family (Ericaceae). Its leaves are oddly tangy and tart, full of oxalic acid. It's a great little tree!
