Why We Host Civic Events

As an event venue, curator of a theater, and Durham's front porch, Fullsteam has a role to play in fostering community, curiosity, and civic engagement.

Fundamentally, we believe communities benefit from opportunities to learn, engage, and discuss important civic issues.

Hosting a civic event does not mean we endorse every speaker, participant, organization, or viewpoint involved. In many cases, civic dialogue brings together people with differing experiences, perspectives, and opinions.

At the same time, we recognize that not all ideas contribute equally to healthy public discourse. We do not host events that promote or advocate:

• hatred,
• discrimination,
• violence,
• unlawful activity, or
• demonstrably false information presented as fact.

We believe healthy communities require both conviction and curiosity. The confidence to stand for what is true and the humility to learn from one another. When people only encounter those who think exactly as they do, understanding becomes harder and communities become more fragmented.

Our goal is not to eliminate disagreement, nor to endorse every viewpoint expressed at events held in our spaces. Our goal is to foster opportunities for thoughtful, good-faith civic engagement that strengthens our connection to one another and to the places we call home—while maintaining standards consistent with our core values.
