Benny's Best
Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy
Limited Releases Malt
Wee Heavies—also known as strong Scotch ales—are malt-forward beers, rich and warming, with deep caramel and toffee notes. Hops have never been Scotland’s claim to fame, so the malt does the heavy lifting here.
Benny’s Best builds on that tradition, as well as Head Brewer Jon's previous experience with other Fullsteam Wee Heavies, Simpson's Best and Skye Boat. The Maris Otter base malt brings a rounded, biscuity sweetness, made richer through a long boil that caramelizes the wort. Supporting malts add subtle roast, nuttiness, and just a hint of smoke. The English yeast (Apex London) lends gentle dark fruit esters that tie everything together.
Jon's Instagram is @jondreamsofweeheavy, so it should come as no surprise that Wee Heavy is his favorite beer to brew and drink. It's a style he's been refining since his homebrewing days.
This year’s version carries extra weight. It’s named for Jon's best pal, Benny, who passed away in September. All dogs are special, but Benny was one of a kind. This one’s for him.
