Bolly Monday – My dream, your reality

How’s everyone’s Monday going? I’m posting this from a bus station in the great north! I’m trying to get back to Durham as fast as I can, but I’m not going to make it in time for a Suman meal. That means you all are going to have to eat my share. It looks like a good one too. Marinated onion relish… yum! I say dig in and wash it all down with a pint of Fullsteam. Wish I were there!

Today and every Sunday! It’s Olde Timey Funday!

Every Sunday mid-afternoon, we bring you a little Southern-Fried Sunday: beer from us! Barbecue from Olde North State BBQ or Mama Jean’s! And bluegrass (mostly…sometimes we stray from the theme to bring in some blues, alt-country, or songwriters).

This Sunday’s entertainment comes from theJeremy Autry Band! Come at 4 p.m. for some country rock straight out of Greensboro. As always, you’ll be able to snag some barbecue at Fullsteam starting at 3 with Olde North State:  ’cue, ribs, sandwiches, and more. And let’s not forget the beer: Carver, and Fullsteam, and Working Man’s Lunch, plus Hogwash, Overtime, and Beasley’s Honey White. Plenty of NC guest taps too!

The Saturday Social: Holding Space

This was a hard and emotional week for a lot of us. On election night, the mood around Rigsbee was hard to describe. The results weren’t looking good but people kept filling the block. There was music (thanks to the Bulltown Strutters) and dancing, animated conversations, clusters of friends in the streets. It was a party—in the sense that people came out to be with each other; it felt like a physical reassurance that, even in defeat, we aren’t alone. Earlier in the week I mentioned that all the twitter and Facebook chatter leading up to and during the election made me proud to live in Durham, but seeing Rigsbee Ave on Tuesday night made me feel something deeper than pride. The strength and energy of the community was palpable—it was inspiring, and it was a comfort too.

“Holding space” is a phrase I’ve been thinking about a lot since then. I think that’s one thing Fullsteam has always aimed to do. There isn’t always something on the calendar here. The Saturday Social, for example: the event where we do nothing except serve you beer. As Sean posted, we want to serve the LGBT community however we can. Today and every day, our space is open to you.
